After many private messages I have decided that a blog post is the best way to answer your questions. What questions you ask? The questions are usually Why a crocheted uterus? Whats the story on the lady parts? I have even lost facebook fans on the mere fact that some of my shop inventory includes *gasp* lady parts...
Well, the truth of the matter is I can not fully answer those questions without telling you about myself...At a young age I knew I had period problems..Not like the happy period commercials, in fact it was from it. I never had any desire to frolic carelessly through the fields of wildflowers. Motrin didn't solve my period problems. In junior high school I vividly remember missing a weeks worth of school with nothing to blame it on other than my period. I wont go in to too much detail other than it was similar to food poisoning and the flu all wrapped up into one all while feeling like I had just ran a marathon on no sleep for one weeks time. I LIVED on the downstairs sofa because I just plain out didn't have the energy to climb the stairs to get to my bedroom. My doctors began me on horse pill size motrin which evolved into many years of pain medications.
Fast forward to age 21 I was diagnosed with Endometriosis. I had no real knowledge of what that meant other than someone was finally going to listen me and NOT tell me know I was over reacting or to suck it up. I soon had my first laproscopy surgery, an exploratory surgery in where the nasty bits of Endo were removed and cauterized. Following surgery I was put on medication to make my body think it was going through menopause to prevent the Endo from "growing". Well, it worked for a short period time. Insert more surgeries, hormones and enough pain medication to put down a large farm animal and many 3 hour trips to UCSF to meet with specialists and still no relief.
I had talked to my doctors about in vitro fertilization and I was told everything from Well you havent gotten pregnant yet so I cant guarantee that you thats a possibility. If I were to get pregnant there was a slim chance that would be able to carry this child.
My doctor and I decided together that a hysterectomy was the only avenue left that could "guarantee" I would be out of pain and off pain meds. I had always told Mom that I just need somewhere to put my uterus in a jar, put it on a shelf and come back when I needed it.
In my mid 20's I had a partial hysterectomy. I had always wanted children of my own but that didnt seem to be in cards for me. I do have two step children that I love like they are my own and that made my decision easier.
Ladies let me tell you that a hysterectomy IS NOT a cure for Endo pain. It is NOT an easy pain free, period free life for me.
So you ask why a uterus plushie? I say why not a uterus plushie?
The month of March is Endometriosis Awareness Month and my objective was to sell my plushies during the month and donate a portion of my sales to research. Little did I know they give great joy and giggles to many that are facing gyno surgeries. My plushies have been given has gag gifts but much to the gifters surprise they are put up on a shelf and kept as souvenir of sorts.
So that folks, THAT is why the Uterus plushies
